There is a strong support system at JMSS which underpins all learning. At JMSS we take a planned approach to esteeming mindfulness which will take shape, through Healthy Body, Healthy Mind and as part of our school culture.
The school is noted for its house system, with all students allocated to one of four houses for their entire time at JMSS. The school has four Houses and various mentor Groups, and a strong Pastoral Program that supports the students’ growth and development.
Each student has their own mentor teacher who will also remain with them during this time. Mentors are the first port of call for parents and students, and are responsible for overseeing each student’s day-to-day progress and wellbeing. The school runs many house events and other programs designed to build confidence, resilience, connectedness and spirit within the community.
The main aim of Pastoral Care at John Monash Science School is to provide a caring educational environment where positive relationships are developed and where each student is known and cared for as an individual.
Students have access to a wide support network including mentors, Educational Psychologist, School Counsellor, Careers Counsellor, Learning Support and other members of a Wellbeing Team led by our Assistant Principal. All teams work to develop positive relationships with the students and their families, and monitor and support student wellbeing, both in and out of the classroom.
Mindfulness practices help build individual mental health and wellbeing through positive, pre-emptive tools and activities.
At JMSS we take a planned approach to esteeming mindfulness will take shape, through Healthy Body, Healthy Mind and as part of our school culture. We have recently added a mindfulness room to our building where students can relax, practise yoga, meditation or have group discussions. This space is open to all students.
