Celebrating culture, community and diversity at John Monash Science School

At John Monash Science School, diversity is one of our greatest strengths, alongside our passion for science and technology.

With students and staff members representing more than 40 cultural backgrounds, Harmony Day has been an important part of our school calendar for the past 14 years. To ensure the event receives the attention it deserves, we dedicate additional time in our calendar to celebrate this important occasion rather than holding it during the nationally recognised period in March.

Our 2026 Harmony Day celebration and school assembly was held last week. It was a wonderful celebration of the cultural diversity, creativity, and talent within our school community. From Chinese, Filipino, Russian, and Hebrew instrumental performances to Indian singing, K-pop, French dance acts, Australian bush dancing, and spectacular Bollywood performances, the program presented an extraordinary range of student talent and cultural pride.

Many students attended the celebration wearing traditional attire and clothing that reflected their cultural heritage.

Staff members also embraced the occasion, proudly wearing outfits that represented their cultural backgrounds.

An absolute highlight was the final performance by our Year 12 Bollywood dance group, who were later joined by teachers and members of the leadership team. The performance perfectly captured the joy, energy, and JMSS spirit of the occasion, bringing the celebration to a memorable close and earning applause and enthusiastic cheers from students and staff alike.

The event was a vibrant reminder of the rich diversity that makes our school community so special. At JMSS, everyone is part of our safe, inclusive, and welcoming community. No matter where you come from or what your story may be, you belong. We are proud to share a community where everyone can celebrate their identity and pursue their dreams freely and safely.
