Regional Science Exchange

Held annually, the John Monash Science School (JMSS) Regional Science Exchange (Rex) invites Year 10 students from regional Victorian schools with a passion for science to join us for an immersive experience.

The 2026 Program

Applications for the 2026 REx program now open

The 2026 Regional Science Exchange (REx) program will take place from 21 June to 26 June, at John Monash Science School.

Successful applicants will join us for a six-day science experience. During their stay, students will participate in a variety of hands-on science workshops at our school and Monash University. They will also undertake a special STEM development workshop at the Monash Tech School and explore emerging technologies such as robotics and programming.

Applications must be :

  • Submitted by a nominated teacher
  • must include the student’s personal response to the required reflection questions
  • a teacher reference letter

Selection criteria

Applications for Year 10 students

The program is for Year 10 students who have talent, interest, curiosity, and enthusiasm in Science, Mathematics, and/or Technology.

Interested students are encouraged to speak with their school’s teacher and work with them to develop an application for the 2026 program.

In your application, 

Teachers should:

  • Fill in the teacher nomination form
  • Provide a summary of the student’s academic performance over the period Years 7- 9, with particular reference to science, mathematics, and technology capabilities.
  • Please comment on the student’s potential and the program’s value to the student and the school

Students should:

  • Address the questions outlined in the Student Application Form

REx Eligibility

The Regional Science Exchange Program only accepts applications from Year 10 students located in the following Regions:

  • South Eastern/Gippsland (Inner and Outer Gippsland areas),
  • North Eastern/Hume (Goulburn and Ovens Murray areas),
  • North Western/Loddon Mallee (Loddom Campaspe and Mallee areas),
  • South Western/Grampians and Barwon South West (Central Highlands, Barwon and Wimmera South West areas)

Cost

  • Participation in the REx program is fully funded for all successful applicants
  • Thanks to Victorian government funding, free accommodation and most meals will be provided to all REx applicants
  • Students may need to pay for a couple of meals, souvenirs, and/or social activities. We recommend they bring up to $100 to adequately cover these costs.
