Primary School Outreach Programs

John Monash Science School (JMSS) hosts several Outreach Programs throughout the school year, including our flagship Primary School Outreach Programs Little Scientists, Big Science and Mini Mathematicians.

Primary School Outreach Programs.

Our ‘Little Scientists, Big Science’ and ‘Mini Mathematicians’ programs introduce high-achieving Grade 5/6 students to a range of advanced topics and experiments. Our JMSS Year 10 and 11 students mentor Primary School participants through four exciting sessions, opening their eyes to a world of possibilities in the STEM realm.

The program encourages our JMSS students to develop a range of skills such as mentoring, leadership, and responsibility, which align with the UNESCO Four Pillars of Learning to enhance their learning experience as part of their Co-Curricular Program.

It also allows Primary School Students to learn from our students, develop their curiosity, feed their passions for STEM and see what it is like to study at JMSS.

Students in the Little Scientists, Big Science Program will explore topics such as the physics of flight; the pH of household goods; cells, adaptation and anatomy; and robotics and engineering.

Meanwhile, those interested in the Mini Mathematicians program will tackle maths through hands-on problem-solving games, puzzles, and kinetic challenges.

The program runs each Wednesday from 1.30pm to 3pm for four weeks* and is available six times a year.

Our Primary School Outreach Programs are open to Victorian State Schools only.

Programs currently offered.

Primary School Outreach Programs currently offered at JMSS:

  • Little Scientists, Big Science
  • Mini Mathematicians

Applications are now open.

Little Scientists, Big Science.

In this program, our students are paired with groups from Primary Schools as they work through experiments and content ranging from biology to physics. Students are also given the opportunity to present the findings of a research project at our Science Fair!

Exploring Science is thinking about some of the sciences that are present in our everyday lives.  You’ll have fun creating bubbles and combining it with food and materials science.  Time to get messy!!

Other fields of science are also explored in this program and students will take part in a variety of experiments such as:

Physics

  • Students will look at flight, build paper planes, and craft egg parachute devices

Chemistry

  • Students will investigate the properties of acids and bases, explore the pH scale, and create indicators to identify the pH of different substances.

Biology

  • Students will observe cells under the microscope, identify similarities and differences in the adaptations of animals, and explore links between anatomy and engineering by making a robot hand.

Students undertaking the Little Scientists, Big Science unit are also tasked with conducting their own research project post-program and are given the opportunity to present their findings alongside our JMSS students at one of our School Science Fairs!

Mini Mathematicians.

This program pairs our students with Primary School groups as they work together through hands on problem solving games, puzzles, and kinetic challenges - all with a healthy dose of mathematics!

Brand new content!

We are excited to announce that, this year, Mini Mathematicians has a brand new curriculum that has been developed in conjunction with Think Square.

It now includes all new topics and games that have at-home challenges your students can enjoy!

Provided by JMSS.

JMSS will supply the following for participants of the Primary School Outreach Programs:

  • Training and support for our year 10 and 11 students teaching the program;
  • One of our laboratories for the program;
  • All materials used in the experiments, activities, practical components and challenges;
  • Class Facilitator and laboratory technician staff from JMSS present during the workshops;
  • Support for Primary School students to complete their research projects and display them at one of JMSS’s Science Fairs;
  • Opportunities for Primary teachers to observe lessons and engage with our students and teachers regarding the content and processes.

2. Coordinate which students will be participating in the program

  • A maximum of four students per subject
  • Schools are eligible to participate in up to 3 units (Little Scientists, Big Science 1, Little Scientists, Big Science 2, and Mini Mathematicians)
  • Each unit can host a maximum of 6 Primary Schools per fortnight

3. Arrange transport to and from JMSS on program days

  • Parking is NOT available at JMSS (Primary Schools must coordinate parking at Monash University, or elsewhere)
  • Program runs fortnightly on Wednesdays between 1.30pm and 3pm (PS Groups must arrive between 1 – 1.15pm for check in.

love to have you)

Applications.

If your school is successful in its application, you will receive an acceptance letter and a draft timetable. This will be at the end of 2024 for the Trimester 1 Programs, and early in 2025 for the Trimester 2 & 3 Programs.

Please contact JMSS as soon as possible if there are any issues with the draft timetable.

You will then receive a confirmation of programs around 2 weeks after the draft timetable.
